Yuen Long "Yun Tuen"

The Dumpling, or "Yun Tuen" in Cantonese, reigns as the feline dignitary of a pet shop in Yuen Long's On Hing Street. Renowned in the feline realm for his perfectly rotund physique and affectionate disposition, "Yun Tuen"  has garnered quite a reputation. His favorite pastime involves basking in the sun, sprawled out in front of the shop's entrance, his exposed belly begging for gentle caresses. Passersby often seize the opportunity to stroke him, and to their surprise, "Yun Tuen"  offers no resistance. He neither extends his claws nor bites, allowing even the most sensitive areas, such as his belly, to be touched. Truly a paragon of docility. Esteemed artists of "100Most" and Cuson Lo, have made special visits to pay their respects to "Yun Tuen", further catapulting him into the realm of stardom.

The pet shop frequently shares the daily life of "Yun Tuen" on their Facebook and Instagram pages, humorously referring to him as the "BOSS." Furthermore, they often dress him in various outfits, but his most frequently adorned accessory is a thick gold chain, a display of undeniable dominance.

The Feline Kingdom of Oi Man Estate, Ho Man Tin

Oi Man Estate in Ho Man Tin, which was completed in 1974, boasts a nearly 50-year-old legacy. Within the estate, one can find a multitude of old-style tea restaurants, grocery stores, and other small businesses that exude the nostalgic essence of old Hong Kong. Many of these establishments are graced by “shop cats“, and with a significant population of stray cats residing within the estate, Oi Man Estate has truly become a feline kingdom. In fact, passionate feline enthusiasts among the local community have taken it upon themselves to establish the "Feline Kingdom of Oi Man Estate" on Facebook and Instagram, where they regularly share the daily lives of the feline residents.

Within the realm of the "Feline Kingdom," there are at least nine renowned and distinguished "shop cats", with one in particular being the most beloved and warmly welcomed - "Qian Qian," or "Money Money" in English. Qian Qian is a beautiful tabby cat with a white base and yellow stripes, and possesses eyes that bear a hint of mischievousness, making it easily recognizable. This charismatic feline can be seen energetically climbing trees and patrolling the premises, while at other times, indulging in lazy repose atop the merchandise in the grocery store, much to the delight of the local community. There was a brief period when rumors circulated about the closure of the shop where Qian Qian resided, causing great concern and even prompting media coverage. Fortunately, it turned out to be a false alarm, and Qian Qian continues to reign supreme within the estate, bringing comfort to all who adore and cherish this majestic feline.

The Feline Haven of Sam Kee in North Point

Deep within the basement of King's Centre in North Point lies a hidden feline paradise. The area sees little foot traffic, giving off an air of tranquility, except for one brightly lit establishment that radiates immense popularity - Sam Kee Bookstore. Miss Chen, the proprietor of the bookstore, possesses a profound love for both books and cats. Whenever she encounters stray cats in need of rescue, she takes them in and provides a nurturing environment. Once they have grown, she arranges for caring individuals to adopt them. Over the course of several decades, hundreds of cats have found solace and care within the bookstore premises. Those with illnesses, timid dispositions, or less aesthetically pleasing appearances, the ones less likely to be adopted, find Sam Kee a permanent home under Miss Chen's devoted care. As a result, there are no less than twenty to thirty cats residing within the bookstore.

These "shop cats" of Sam Kee Bookstore leisurely roam the premises, creating an atmosphere of serenity that enhances the joy of reading. However, Miss Chen emphasizes that she has no intention of exploiting the cats for business purposes. She also fears that excessive human interaction and cat playfulness might cause distress to the feline residents. Consequently, she has prominently displayed a sign within the store, stating, "This is a bookstore, merely accompanied by cats. Please do not visit solely for the purpose of playing with the cats." This serves as a reminder to visitors to respect the cats' presence and refrain from disturbing their restful moments.

Pharmacy "shop cats" in Mong Kok, "Mr Don't"

Lastly, we have the most renowned but simultaneously the least "friendly" of all. The "shop cats" "Mr Don't" is a majestic tiger-striped cat who holds court in a prominent pharmacy on Mong Kok Road. Situated in a bustling location, the pharmacy attracts a constant stream of people, and Mr Don't can often be found peacefully slumbering in plain view. During leisurely moments, Mr Don't enjoys taking strolls along the streets. The combination of Mr Don't's fearlessness towards humans and refusal to avoid their presence has catapulted his popularity to great heights. He even boasts his own dedicated Facebook group called the "Hands-Off Fans Club (唔好摸我關注組)," with an impressive following of over 22,000 adoring fans.

However, Mr Don't acquired his name due to the protective measures taken by the pharmacy to ensure his well-being. Signs with the words "Don't touch" in bold letters are posted throughout the shop, earning him the moniker of "Mr Don't." In reality, Mr Don't's original name was "Little Tiger," affectionately known as "Tiger Tiger." He is now approximately 8 or 9 years old and no longer in his youthful prime. At the beginning of the year, there were reports that Mr Don't had temporarily left the pharmacy for veterinary treatment due to his refusal to eat after the Lunar New Year. Some fans speculated that the excessive visits and disturbances during the festive period, had led to his illness. In consideration of Mr Don't's health, it is important to admire him from a distance and refrain from any undue familiarity.

In conclusion, it is important to recognize that not every "shop cats" duty is to serve as a "greeter." Sometimes, these esteemed cats may simply be the beloved companions of the shop owners, residing within the premises without the obligation to welcome customers. The next time you encounter "shop cats" on the streets, remember to inquire with the staff before engaging with them. Understanding and respecting these cats is what truly qualifies one as a true cat lover.
