Village fishpond view - Ma Tso Lung

Ma Tso Lung is located to the north of Kwu Tung and adjacent to Futian, Shenzhen. It was once a border restricted area, but it has gradually become a picnic destination since the ban was lifted in 2013. Departing from Ma Tso Lung Shun Yee San Tsuen, walk to the second-class historical building MacIntosh Forts. Looking ahead, the prosperous high-rise buildings in Futian, Shenzhen and the rural fishponds in Hoo Hok Wai in Hong Kong contrast with each other. This is a hotspot for enjoying the sunset, and the fishponds reflect the colorful clouds, like being in a paradise. After that, it passed through Liu Pok Village, Sheung Yue River, and left through Ho Sheung Heung via a large water pipe. The whole journey is short, and the ups and downs are not large. It is a good choice for people and dogs to walk in the mountains. But one thing to be aware of is that there are many wild dogs in the countryside, so you must be careful to protect and control your dogs to avoid conflict.

  • Route: Shun Yee San Tsuen > MacIntosh Forts > Liu Pok Village > Sheung Yue River > Ho Sheung Heung
  • Length: 5 kilometers (approximately 2 hours)
  • Difficulty: ⭐

Mirror of the Sky, Red "Maple" Tree-Flowing - Lau Shui Heung Reservoir

Lau Shui Heung Reservoir can be described as the most lively outing destination in recent years, known as the "Hong Kong version of Karuizawa", "Hong Kong Little Guilin", and "the mirror of the sky in the forest." Walking around the pond in the woods, you can enjoy the reflections in the water and the scenery. The banks of the pond are planted with rows of melaleuca and sylvestris. In autumn and winter, the sylvestris are covered with brown infrared coats, and the red leaves are staggered like an oil painting. Walking from the Lau Shui Heung Country Trail to the Hok Tau Reservoir Family Walk, you can reach the quiet Hok Tau Reservoir. After that, Sha Lo Tung is a valley basin, and the deserted rice fields have a special flavor. Lau Shui Heung Reservoir is located in the Pat Sin Leng Country Park, so it is well-equipped and connected to many hiking trails. The following is just one of the many routes. You can adjust your itinerary according to your dog's physical strength.

  • Route: Lau Shui Heung Country Trail > Hok Tau Reservoir Family Walk > Sha Lo Tung > Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve
  • Length: 7 kilometers (approximately 3 hours)
  • Difficulty: ⭐⭐

Featured Newbie Route - Luk Keng Kuk Po

The hiking trail from Luk Keng to Kuk Po, along the way, you can enjoy the coastal scenery of Sha Tau Kok, oyster beach, mangrove forest, and wetland ecology. This route has no open landscape, but the countryside is full of fun. Although the Fung Hang Village passing by does not welcome outsiders to enter, watching the Hakka village in the hidden valley from a distance is quite a movie scene. There is a small reed field in front of the village, and a sea of golden reed flowers will grow in autumn and winter, like a dream. The small white pier and lamp post outside the village are also popular photo spots. After this route reaches Kuk Po, you need to turn back along the road, and the whole journey is mainly on flat roads, which is easy and convenient. At the beginning, there are plenty of cafes, so you can eat before you start.

Tsuen Wan

Golden Miscanthus Resort - Tai Mo Shan

Tai Mo Shan is the highest mountain in Hong Kong, with an altitude of 957 meters. Standing on the top, you can enjoy the unobstructed view. When there is no cloud, you can overlook the scenery from Kowloon Peninsula to Hong Kong Island, and overlook Kam Tin, Shek Kong, Yuen Long Plain and even Shenzhen. When encountering a sea of clouds, it is like a misty fairyland. Don't be scared by the number of peaks, you can drive straight along Tai Mo Shan Road. If you choose to climb on foot, start from the country park visitor center and walk along the concrete road to reach the top in about two hours. If you go during November to December, you will find a large area of charming golden miscanthus along the way. Compared to Sunset Peak, which is famous for its miscanthus, Tai Mo Shan is easier to navigate. After arriving at the Tai Mo Shan Lookout, there is a large grassland next to it, where you can have fun and rest with the dogs. Except for the uphill section, which is a little bit hard, Tai Mo Shan is an easy hiking route for novices. Just remember that the newbies must turn back along the road at the highest point. If you go to the Lead Mine Pass and other directions, the difficulty and time will be doubled.

  • Route: Tai Mo Shan Country Park Visitor Center > Tai Mo Shan Lookout > Rotary Park
  • Length: 7 kilometers (about 3 hours)
  • Difficulty: ⭐⭐

Beautiful view of Melaleuca - Shing Mun Reservoir

Shing Mun Reservoir is a hot spot for outings, and it is also very suitable for bringing dogs to a “forest bath”. From the Pineapple Dam Nature Trail into the White Melaleuca Forest Road, the forest planting area is picturesque and the sound of running water is gurgling. Shortly after the trip, there is a pond beside the white layered pond. The reflections in the water and the trees are intertwined, and every shot is beautiful. Going up to the viewing platform, the quiet forest scene turns into a magnificent landscape in a blink of an eye. If you like the big grass, you can walk along the road to the main dam to the "Shing Mun Picnic Site No. 12" and rest on the grass by the pond. The entire route is mostly flat and easy, with few uphills and downs. However, it is important to note that this area is the habitat of monkeys, and there are also many cattle and wild boars. It is necessary to deal with the reactions and emotions of dogs in the face of wild animals.

  • Route: Pineapple Dam Nature Trail > Shing Mun Reservoir Main Dam > Shing Mun Road
  • Length: 8.8 kilometers (about 3.5 hours)
  • Difficulty: ⭐⭐

Take a dog to watch the red leaves - Yuen Tsuen Ancient Trail

The pedestrian and dog hiking route from Tsuen Wan to Yuen Long starts from Allway Gardens (Hong Kong Adventist Hospital). After walking up to the Shek Lung Kung Heights, you can have a panoramic view of Tsuen Wan and Tsing Ma Bridge with open views. Afterwards, the scenery is dominated by the green and secluded woods. Along the road, there will be a small bamboo forest and a small bridge, which is a check-in venue for photographers to use their skills. The end point is the popular Tai Tong Sweet Gum Woods. The latter part is not hard, but there is no supply station along the road, and the complete journey is quite long, which is suitable for dogs with longer endurance.

  • Length: 15 kilometers (about 5 hours)
  • Difficulty: ⭐⭐⭐
