My cats sleep together after fight, are they getting along well or not?

My cats sleep together after fight, are they getting along well or not?

As more and more people are willing to help cats, there are more and more multi-cat families. The caregivers hope that the cats in the family will love each other and keep each other company, but not everyone is so lucky. Owners often ask: what to do when cats fight? Many owners will separate them when they see them chasing and making noise with each other, fearing that their cats will get hurt, but in fact, many times the cats are just playing and not really fighting.

Playing between cats is actually simulating hunting or fighting to train cats' survival skills. They will simulate attacking, defending, slapping and chasing each other. It really looks like they are fighting. If you want to distinguish whether a cat is playing or fighting, you can pay attention to the following points:

  1. When playing, cats usually do not stretch out their claws; when biting each other, they will also stop at a point to avoid hurting each other.

  2. When playing, usually two cats will take turns playing the roles of hunter and prey, and there will usually be a short "truce" period before changing roles.

  3. Occasionally during play, there may be one or two hisses or screams because the other party is playing too roughly. This is a normal and important learning process in play that allows cats to grasp each other's bottom line. Unless hissing or screaming occurs frequently, there are injuries or the attacker does not know how to converge, we do not need and should not intervene.

  4. If the cats "fight" and then groom each other's or sleep together afterwards, you can rest assured that the cats are just playing. But if one of them avoids the other before and after interaction, hisses or even arches its back and puff up its fur, it may really be fighting.

If cats really fight each other, the result can be very tragic. As caregivers we do have a responsibility to handle it carefully, but at the same time we also need to know how to distinguish whether our cats are playing or really starting a fight because being able to play together between cats is a sign of good relationship. If we stop them from contacting each other because we don't know how to distinguish between them, it would be a pity!
